The mehndi ceremony is one of the most photographed and most joyful events in an Indian wedding calendar. It is colourful, informal, and full of movement — which makes it a uniquely different challenge from bridal or reception makeup. Here is how to look absolutely stunning without looking overdressed for a daytime celebration.

Keep the base light and luminous

Mehndi functions are typically daytime events with natural light — the best light for photography. This is not the time for a heavy matte base. Go for a BB cream or a light-to-medium coverage foundation with a dewy finish. Your skin should look healthy and radiant, not masked.

Embrace colour on the eyes

Mehndi is perhaps the one ceremony where you can be playful and adventurous with eye colour. Corals, teals, yellows, pinks — all of these work beautifully and photograph with vibrancy against the colourful textiles and mehndi patterns. Keep the application soft and blended, not sharp.

A statement lip or a statement eye — not both

Because mehndi outfits are typically bold in colour and pattern, choose one feature to highlight. A bright coral or fuchsia lip with soft eyes is a classic combination. Alternatively, a defined, colourful eye with a nude or MLBB (my lips but better) lip creates a more editorial finish.

Set for humidity

If your mehndi is outdoors — which many are — humidity is your biggest enemy. Use a matte primer on your T-zone, waterproof your liner and mascara, and set your makeup with a translucent powder followed by a setting spray. Avoid products with shimmer in the base as these can look oily as the day progresses.

Your hands will be photographed

During mehndi application, your hands are constantly on show. Make sure your nails are clean and well-shaped, and consider a light hand cream the night before (not the morning of, as you want your skin to absorb the mehndi). Avoid heavy rings or bangles on the hand being worked on until the mehndi is dry.
